Lauren Childs, an affiliate professor in the Department of Mathematics, part of the Virginia Tech School of Science, has been awarded the 2023–24 Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize by Association for Females in Mathematics (AWM) and Cornell College.
The award grants a mid-job mathematician a household fellowship in Cornell University’s Section of Mathematics with no training obligations. Childs will “pursue a study venture advancing mathematical idea and strategies for trait-dependent models of infectious sickness, together with integral projection types,” in accordance to the association. “Such designs will also be employed to analyze the spread of infectious disease, in particular malaria, and associated population dynamics.”
In addition, Childs will interact with college from Cornell’s Section of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She ideas to get there at Cornell this fall.
“I am honored to acquire the 2023-2024 Michler Memorial Prize and am significantly searching ahead to returning to my alma mater Cornell to invest a semester targeted on study,” Childs claimed. “Many many thanks to the Michler spouse and children, the AWM, and the Cornell mathematics division for the option to interact with the outstanding mathematicians in the section.”
Peter Haskell, professor and chair of Virginia Tech’s arithmetic division, stated, “Lauren is an excellent mathematical biologist whose research attracts on and contributes to biological sciences, arithmetic, computational science, modeling, and experimentation. She is also anyone who can generally be counted on for insightful contributions to policy discussions.”
The prize is named for Ruth I. Michler, an affiliate professor at the University of North Texas, who was killed in November 2000 at age 33 when she was struck by a construction auto whilst riding her bicycle, in accordance to the AWM. It was recognized by Michler’s dad and mom, Gerhard and Waltraud Michler. Michler was born in Ithaca, New York, dwelling to Cornell.
Childs earned twin bachelor’s levels in arithmetic and chemistry from Duke College in 2004 and master’s and doctoral levels in utilized arithmetic from Cornell in 2007 and 2010, respectively. She done postdoctoral work at the Georgia Institute of Know-how and at the Harvard T.H. Chan University of Community Wellbeing, and put in a semester at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
She joined Virginia Tech in 2016. She has penned more than 40 articles or blog posts in major research journals and has offered more than 75 invited professional presentations. The Cliff and Agnes Lilly School Fellow in the Faculty of Science, Childs was promoted to affiliate professor in 2022.
In addition to the Division of Mathematics, Childs is an affiliated school member with the devices biology method in the Academy of Built-in Science, also element of the College or university of Science, and a member of the Fralin Lifetime Sciences Institute.
She has been awarded grants by the National Institutes of Wellbeing the National Science Foundation, which includes its prestigious Career Award in 2022 and the Simons Foundation.
The AWM also pointed out Childs’ mentoring of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students and her co-business of an American Mathematical Society’s Arithmetic Analysis Group plan. She also has visitor lectured at the Stanford University Mathematics Camp.
